Pass the serotonin, please

posted in General, The Bad Stuff |

I’m not having a great couple of days. Didn’t walk yesterday, and didn’t walk today. The assignment I’m writing now is not enjoyable at all. I’m not eating right. I can’t quit smoking. All I can think about lately is pizza, subs, steaks, desserts, and Pepsi. And tomorrow I’m going out of town to visit an old friend I haven’t seen in years, and I doubt if we’ll get much walking or healthy eating done there. I’m sure I’ll have put on a couple pounds come Sunday. It’s very discouraging. 200 pounds seems so far away.

I’m discouraged, but not terribly so. I knew I’d have days like this going in. But I’m not going to get too down about it. I’ll do better next week, and eventually this new way of life will become a habit.

Greg - Seriously man don’t do it. You can’t go in with this attitude. How about you take a packed meal enough for the two of you? Bang together a yummy salad with some grilled chicken, or how about some fruit salad? For drinks take up some bottled / filtered water. As a treat make your own fruit juice.

As for the meeting. Who say’s you have to do it inside? You said you like walking. How about you both go for a walk in the local bush land? Say to your mate “Hey I’ve never been to ….. How about we check it out?”

I mean you don’t have to go hard. Just a cruisy walk with a pre-made salad (don’t forget the plates and knives and forks) would sure beat sitting in and eating crap.

Don’t take your ciggies with you on your walk either ;-)

    Take care

Greg, you are focusing on too many negative things.

Speak to your self, point out to your head all that you have achieved of the last couple of weeks.

    The wieght lost already.
    The walking you have done.
    The better eating habits.
    The feeling good inside.

I am sure you could list more, let go of the negative things and tell yourself this is what I (Greg) have done and will contine to do.

And finish it all off with a big dollop of, “

    Gregg;

While keeping your goal of reaching 200 lbs why not set some smaller goals before that to use as milestones and inspiration?

Why not make a goal out of losing every 10 lbs while keeping your eyes on 250 as a half way point?

Am agreeing with most of these comments.

Serotonin: A chemical, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), found in platelets, the gastrointestinal mucosa, mast cells, carcinoid tumors, and the central nervous system. Serotonin is a vasoconstrictor, and through its action on cellular receptors, it plays important roses in intestinal motility, nausea and vomiting, sleep-awake cycles, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, depression, and eating. [Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, Ed. 20, p. 1978] (Serotonergic neuron: A neural pathway that uses serotonin as a neurotransmitter); (carcinoid: A tumor derived from the neuroendocrine cells in the intestinal tract, bile ducts, pancreas, bronchus, or ovary. It secretes serotonin and other vasoactive substances. [p. 338])

Greg, I’m interested in knowing why you picked up on this. ? Anti-depressent meds — romantic love — obssessive-compulsive/anxiety disorders? I’m used to humor being seated in an underlying truth. What were your thoughts?

A few quick recaps about serotonin that maybe a few here wouldn’t have read yet (it’s pretty complicated stuff):

    The Serotonin Connection

    - Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that conveys the positive sensations of satiety, satisfaction and relaxation. It regulates appetite and when converted to melatonin helps us to sleep.
    - A deficiency of Serotonin in the brain can cause endogenous depression, upsets the appetite mechanism and may lead to obesity or other eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa and may be responsible for insomnia. Doctors usually prescribe Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) which have the effects of increasing the amount Serotonin and thereby medically treat the above conditions. Unfortunately, SSRIs may have side effects in some patients, and generally do not address the underlying biochemical causes of depression. [Jurriaan Plesman]

    Melatonin and Serotonin

Melatonin affects the production and subsequent action of several other hormone in the body. It works in sync with serotonin, a powerful neurotransmitter from which it is derived. Serotonin is involved in several central physiological processes, including pain perception, temperature and blood-pressure regulation, and several neuropsychological functions such as appetite, memory, and mood. Like melatonin, serotonin levels influence a myriad of endocrine activities, including those performed by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Generally speaking, melatonin and serotonin are not active in the body at the same time. As mentioned earlier, melatonin is active at night, serotonin is active in the daytime. [sunlight vs. no sunlight] Although both tend to moderate endocrine functions, serotonin may also have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system if its levels are too high in the bloodstream. It has been known to cause blood clotting and narrowing of the blood vessels, among other problems. And, unlike melatonin, serotonin levels in the body do not decrease as we age, but instead increase in relation to other hormones and neurotransmitters. Scientists who specialize in the study of elderly and the aging process believe that this age-related imbalance between serotonin and melatonin may play as important a role in the aging process as the lack of melatonin itself, particularly in relation to heart disease. Without melatonin to act as a free-radical scavenger during the night, more damage may occur to blood vessels, thus stimulating the release of more serotonin. [ICBS, Inc.]

My hubby just quit smoking. He used those nicotine lozenges. He said he like it better than what he had tried in the past. He has gone…about two weeks I think without cigarettes. :) Now he’s only using a lozenge or two a day, maybe. Seems like it worked pretty good.
