Eat To Live

posted in Diet Books, FatBlogging, General, Joel Fuhrman, The Good Stuff |

That’s the name of a book I’m reading by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. He says almost all cancers and heart problems could be eliminated by cutting out animal products from our diets. He also recognizes that most people aren’t going to become vegetarians, so he stresses that that we should do what we can to move toward the ideal. I have a long way to go, and I’m sure most of you do, too. Dr. Fuhrman also says that no more than 10% of our food should be cooked, with the other 90% being raw fruits and vegetables, juices, and nuts. That’s another goal I’m unlikely to ever attain, but I certainly understand what he’s saying. And he’s not some crank-Joel Fuhrman is an MD with a thriving practice in New York City. He’s also a former Olympic speed skater, and he says he followed these principles even when he trained and competed.

Good luck on the diet. I’ve been on the six week program for 8 days and it’s going great. I’m eating whenever I want but only healthy stuff! I’ll never make the 90% goal but if I can get close to that I think it will make a big difference in my health. Keep posting on your progress.

Everyone needs to be careful about where they get their nutrition advice from.

If medical schools teach nutrition..at all….it is usually one short course and then doctors never keep up.

The education dietitians get is better, but usually out of date, and it depends on the individual dietitian how up to date they are after school.

Then there is the endless number of web mavens who talk authoritatively and who actually know very little.

The only way to really know for yourself that you have good nutrition information is to read up on the subject from a diverse set of sources on a regular basis.

Gregg, I think you would be in good shape if you just avoided eating obvious junk and kept yourself aware of how many calories you are taking in with a food diary.

I’ve been enjoying your blog - thanks for having it!

I’ve been following the guidelines set out by Dr. Fuhrman since the end of October and have never felt better! I, too, am trying to lose 100 pounds.

A couple of points of clarification about Fuhrman’s Eat to Live guidelines. He says that 90% of your food should come from whole, unprocessed plant foods (veggies, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds) and that 10% come from anything else. For the raw/cooked part - he advises that we shoot for a goal of eating 1 pound of raw veggies AND 1 pound of cooked veggies everyday. I’m not up to that yet, but my eating has improved so much - I’ve kicked my cravings for diet soda, cheese and sugar and I eat until I’m full. So far I’ve lost 50 pounds!

I think it’s the healthiest possible way to eat ever, but I also think that even if someone did 50% of what Dr. Fuhrman recommends, they would become healthier.

Best of luck to you in your journey!

Joel Fuhrman was a pairs figure skater, not a speed skater.
