The Secret

If you haven’t heard about The Secret, either the book or the DVD, you must be the last person in America to be finding out about it. It’s this year’s publishing phenom. It’s all about making your dreams come true through what the book calls The Law of Attraction. Bookstores can’t keep it stocked, and the publisher just ordered a new printing of 2 million more copies. Oprah devoted not one, but two separate shows to the The Secret. Clearly, it’s struck a nerve in people interested in personal development and achieving goals such as weight loss and making more money. I’m pretty skeptical about the concept, myself. And the original star of the movie, Esther Hicks, says she learned about the Law of Attraction by channeling the voices of disembodied spirits from outer space. But others claim that there’s nothing weird or strange about it and they didn’t get it from supernatural space aliens in their head, but by rediscovering ancient principles. I have a friend who I love dearly who loves the DVD–she’s watched it five times, and she told me it brings tears to her eyes every time she views it again. I have a lot of respect for her opinion. And Lord knows I need all the help I can get when it comes to achieving goals. Anyway, here’s a skeptical review of it in case you’re interested. You’ll need to scroll down a little to find the review. And, if you’d like, you can watch the movie here for free (it’s opening scenes are very obviously intended to be reminiscent of the ads for The Da Vinci Code movie) and save yourself $35. And you can find positive reviews of it on Amazon and all over the internet. Has anyone watched or read The Secret? If so, feel free to share your thoughts.

I don’t know. To me it seems way off base, too. There’s nothing wrong with positive thinking, setting goals and working towards them, but the way this sounds is that my desire I’ve had since I was ten years old, to be a rock star, did not come true because I didn’t wish for it. It had nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that I can’t sing that great. This just seems to border on a “ME!” version of humanity, where doing good for others means nothing. All that matters is that you desire to get whatever it is you desire, and everyone else is just a pawn in your own thinking. Screw ‘em if they get in the way of your goals!

Ironically, the “star” of the original version of The Secret is the most boring part for me. I love so much of what the other authors/motivational speakers/entrepreneurs say and how they live their lives. It feels like information that I have always known was there and have tried to believe in. It is just nice having it put together in one concise form. I love watching it over and over and always learn something new with every viewing. It may seem too airy/fairy for some people but it defines the word “faith” for me. Watching The Secret reminds me of my faith and sometimes I need the reminder.

The Secret?? Never heard of it. I work long hours and have many other responsibilities with other people otherwise. So glad to see you are still here and making progress. Interesting to observe the “Entertainment” culture America has become. I think my computer has a “DVD”?

Being the idiot that I am, I have never heard of the Secret, but thanks to this great website, I went out and bought the book. F Junior saw the book and burst out laughing. Mrs F said she would tell me the secret but I asked her not to. So far she hasn’t, but once again I have become the butt of the household. Thank your for your inspiration and wisdom.
