Fish Oil For Health And Brains

posted in Childhood Obesity, General, Omega-3, Omega-6, Overweight Kids |

Researchers in England gave fat kids a supplement containing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and encouraged them to modify their diets. They didn’t have much success getting the kids to eat better, and they didn’t lose any weight, but they made three years progress in concentration, reading, memory, and mental agility in only three months, according to this article.

And here’s an article that says that a lot of omega-3 acids are poor quality, and not worth taking, and how to tell if yours are any good.  You should take a pin and drain the contents of the capsule onto a solid (not paper) plate, and then put it in the freezer for around five hours.  If it’s frozen or slushy, it’s probably poor quality oil.  It should either evaporate or stay liquid.

Eating ground ( a coffee grinder for $20 from starbucks will work ) flax seeds will give you the EFAs with about the same punch as fish oil, but without the pollution in fish.

5 raw unsalted walnuts a day will give you your EFAs as well.

We now live in a world where the federal government advises women to limit their tuna intake, for example, because we have polluted the oceans so much.

We also live in a world where I have seen a number of articles from different sources that have predicted that the oceans will have no more fish in about 30 years because of overfishing and pollution.

Time to eat something else and let the oceans recover

The whole EFA ( essential fatty ) thing can confuse most people.

In a nutshell…..har har… people don’t get enough of them and just about everything health wise depends on getting them.

The two to worry about are Omega 3 and Omega 6 acids.

Getting too much of one hurts getting the other and causes health problems.

Americans get far too many Omega 6s and are hurting for more Omega 3s.

In addition to getting Omega 3s ( flax, walnuts ) people need to reduce Omega 6 in their diets to avoid canceling out the Omega 3s they do get.

The big sources of Omega 6s are refined oils. Cut back on fried foods, process foods, snack foods, and baked goods. They have tons of Omega 6 heavy oils.

If you have to use oil use canola oil.
