Long walks good. Short sprints good. Long runs bad.

That’s what this former runner says. He racked up thousands of miles running, but now advises against it. He says our bodies are designed for long periods of low intensity aerobic activity, such as walking, and for short bursts of extremely high intensity activity, such as sprinting. But they’re not designed for long periods of high intensity aerobic workouts, such as running or jogging. It’s a very well written article, and I highly recommend that you read it.

Preach it, brother. I tried enhancing my weight loss with some distance running (I ran cross country in high school), but in the end, my 40 year old body just couldn’t take the punishment. I’m biking now instead, and it’s a ton easier on my joints.

Yeah, people who are seriously overweight should not take up running until they’ve lost significant amounts of weight. You can tear up your body badly doing that. There are people who’ve done it, such as “The Penguin”, who wrote the book The Courage To Start, but in most cases it’s extremely inadvisable. Walking is much, much better.
