Is this the wave of the future?

posted in Cardio, Exercise, Fitness, General, Treadmills, Walking Off The Weight |

The Mayo clinic has come up with a solution for the sedentary lifestyles of office workers. White collar workers don’t burn many calories sitting around all day, no matter how much mental energy they expend. Well, the folks at the Mayo think they have the solution - the treadmill desk. It’s not a joke. They claim that walking very slowly (1 mph) all day instead of sitting would enable a person to drop 66 pounds in a year. It will probably be a while before this trend takes off, but as our obesity epidemic only worsens, it wouldn’t surprise me to eventually see treadmill desks in offices all over America.

CNN had a piece on this. Some surgeon was testing it out and advocating it.

His walking was very slow, barely moving. He claimed it could help people burn an extra 600 - 800 calories a day. You only need a 500 calorie deficit a day to lose a pound a week or 52 pounds a year.

He also answered the criticism that the desk would be a distraction for people doing mentally intense work.

As part of his job he has to study many x-rays and identify problems.

He tested his speed and accuracy studying the x-rays using a normal desk and then with the treadmill desk.

Both his speed and accuracy went up.

Still, the desk costs over a thousand dollars, don’t expect to see them in a cubicle soon.

However, in Japan a gym just opened that uses exercise machines to generate electricity.

    Maybe these desks can too.

Get slimmer workers while getting free electricity for the office.

Mayo’s got a nice little write up of it and the science behind it.

Hello from atop of my Treadmill Desk!

I love my Treadmill Desk so much that I started a blog to explain how you can build your own Treadmill Desk for $49.

    Here’s the URL: http://www.treadmill-desk.com/

Be sure to see the movies and slideshows.

Lastly, I bet you won’t believe how far you can walk in one day while working at your Treadmill Desk (Hint: it’s really far!)

    Thanks,
    Jay Buster
